Atlas Glen-More Petro Heat
295 Eastern Ave, Chelsea
I am very unsatisfied with Atlas Glen-mor, my current heating oil/service provider. They tried to bill me for work which was covered by my service contract, billed me for a tank service contract which I never requested, and today they delivered oil at $2.849/gal, which appears to be 15+ cents/gal higher than rates quoted online.
Recommendations requested. I want a company that values it's customers, bills fairly, and, once you are a customer, doesn't start to jack up the prices. Also, if anyone has had heating oil delivered in the last few days, what was the rate? Thanks!

We also had a bad experience with Atlas. We've had Genove Oil based in Waltham since 2001. They have great customer service and I think they are competitive in price although I haven't compared lately.

CK Smith & CO
99 Crescent Street, Worcester
I have to second this recommendation. I have been a member since it was called BOCA (Boston Oil Consumers Alliance). The premise is that you pay the wholesale cost of the oil on the day of delivery. It fluctuates, but is always lower than retail. My supplier is CK Smith based in Worcester and I do have a service contract with them for both my furnace and oil fired water heater. They are professional and courtious.

Previously we had C K Smith out of Worcester. They were horrible. We went several fills with oil being spilt on the ground and our house followed up with multiple calls to the EPA and the Fire Department. Once our contract ran out we ran to another company.

Coan Oil Inc
196 West Central, Natick
My father has used Coan forever ... over 25 years. He's been extremely happy with the service. He's had a couple problems over the years. Once he ran out of oil but Coan sent over a small amount of FREE oil and a technician to get the furnace started again at no cost. He also has Coan service his furnace and they have always been courteous, honest and respectful. He's been a customer for so long that they send him a huge fruit basket every year at Christmas time.

We use Coan at work and they have been very reliable. I think I will go with them without even checking their price because it seems to me that the difference in price from one supplier to another amounts to no more than $25 at the end of the year.

Kerivan Lane Inc.
30 Charles Street, Needham
We have been using Kerivan Lane with the deal that they offered the framcom community last year. I have been very happy with their service and responsiveness. They have not yet locked in a rate for the upcoming heating season.
Duncan Fuller 08/18/2007
I am leaving Kerivan-Lane, who I used all last year. I went with them for their low oil prices but there was an error on every single bill -- fuel and service -- for the entire twelve months I was with them. Each month it took between one and three phone calls and/or a fax to remove duplicate charges. It wasn't worth saving a penny or two on the oil. So make a note to avoid them too.

Mass Energy Consumers Alliance
670 Center Street, Boston
http://massenergy.com/Oil.How.html
I'd suggest people look into Mass Energy Consumer Alliance: http://massenergy.com/Oil.How.html We've used them for the last couple of years and have been happy. Once you join up, you are assigned an oil distributer and the price you pay is signficantly lower then the prevailing market rate (see their website). We've been assigned James Devenay and have had no problems with their delivery or billing. As far as service goes I will never again use my oil supplier to maintain my boiler. In my opinion this set up is prone to conflicts of interest since the distributer is making little/no money on your service contract. I came to this conclusion after being snookered by one of the local "reputable" oil dealers when we moved into our first home with oil heat. Their service tech at our annual boiler cleanings kept insisting the efficiency of our 20+ year old boiler was in the high 80%. Well once I got a little smarter about oil heating I discovered todays state of the art oil boilers at best hit the high 80s for efficiency. I dropped this dealer like a hot potatoe, had a new boiler installed and watched my annual oil consumption decline ~25% over the last few seasons. Since that time I've had the company who did the installation, Boucher Energy Systems, take care of my annual maintance and let me tell you, their techs spent about twice the amount of time cleaning and servicing the boiler each year then those techs from that "reputable" company we used in the past.

Terry Oil
122 South Street Hopkinton
We have been with Terry Oil for three years now and we are happy with their heating system maintenance and repairs and the timeliness of their response when we experience a problem. And, although we are very happy with the overall price that we've been paying for oil during a season there is just one rub which is that the cost of their maintenance contract increases sharply each year, despite the fact that Terry has been willing to reduce its price somewhat from their first invoice when I call to complain. Terry is the branch of Alliance Express that deals with customers who come to them through the Oil Buying Network which you can join for $15/year ($7 as a senior) to buy oil at the spot rate on the day of delivery plus a standard markup that the Oil Buying Network has arranged with Terry. All Oil Buying Network suppliers offer maintenance contracts and we get what Terry/Alliance call the "Silver" version which is one step down from their most comprehensive "gold" coverage. Typically September is the month when heating oil prices peak, which is what makes it tricky to lock into a price for oil from mid/late summer through Fall.
