I have recently used LNG Designs, owned by Lisa Goldsberry and can't say enough good things about her. Lisa made slipcovers and drapes for us. She's been doing home decorating for years, is creative and chock full of ideas and alternatives and happily works to your budget and deadline. She works out of her home in Ashland (it takes me less than 15 minutes to get there from North Framingham).

I don't know who to recommend, but I can tell you who to avoid....
Innuwindow in Natick.
We had custom blinds made and they were not a good fit, nor were they installed well. When we complained, they were unwilling to do anything and were, in fact, rude.

I'm sorry to hear it's not just us. We had some extremely expensive blinds done there, which they recommended for us, and which ripped almost immediately. When we complained, the best they would do was offer to sell us another set at cost. We stare at those torn blinds every day! Definitely avoid Innuwindow.

I wasn't going to chime in but now I feel I have to after reading yet another post about Innuwindow to say this: I have never heard a single person who used them say anything good about them, even those people who haven't suffered a defect.
In Massachusetts, everything is sold with an "implied warrantee of merchantability" meaning, in short, that if you purchase something from a merchant then you have the right to expect that those goods will perform in the manner in which they were intended when they were sold. If you have a problem with something and can't get any resolution from the store, I highly recommend calling the Attorney General's office and asking for advice. I have been given specific language (such as the above) that I have used in seeking resolution. When (if) you contact them be SURE to mention that you are on a loop which has X number (what are we up to now, Steve O?) and you are a VERY vocal person. Be sure also to ask them if they have a quote for Consumerist.com. (I used that the other day and I actually heard the person GULP on the other end of the line. Oh, and I did get what I wanted.)
The squeaky wheel and all that but I find that the nicer I am BUT the bigger the PITA I am, I am usually successful. Be polite, be organized, be persistent.

If you're looking at drapes, I'd also consider an upholsterer who also does drapery (many do). Avery's and Alexson's come to mind. We've consulted them both on furniture re-do's and they both were impressive. If they do drapes, you'd be all set. Whatever you do, I would just be sure you feel absolutely comfortable with whoever you choose for whatever you decide to have done. Custom is VERY expensive and almost always has a no return- no refund policy. Take your time. I hope you find something you love and someone you trust to execute your design. Good luck.

I would NOT recommend Home Depot. I custom ordered from there once several years ago and would never do it again. While the employee was knowledgeable about what I wanted, the order was botched from the beginning and took far longer than for when it had been promised and the quality was not up to par. It was sent back several times and never was exactly right. That could have been just a one-time incident (don't want to insult anyone or step on anyone's toes here), but I prefer to do business with someone who specializes in this area, and not merely a single department in a glorified hardware store. It's a mistake I won't make twice.
