Very, very high recommendation for Herb Chasen
Fair, scrupulous and looks for ways to save YOU money. Good example, we recently had a plumber out to snake a drain. Plumber sourced the problem to a sagging pipe in our basement - said it would be a $700 job to correct the problem. Herb came by yesterday to start some work he's doing for us and when we showed him the pipe he chuckled and said that was a minor fix for a $3 part and he would do it as part of our already established work order.
He's done work for our neighbors and they have the most beautiful home on the whole street.
Check out his web site! Everything from the small stuff to the big stuff.

Herb Chasen of Professional Home Improvement Co. (508-877-9265) did the demo and oversight of my mini-remodel, and was excellent at coordinating utilities and making things happen when they needed to happen.

As for Herb Chasen of Professional Home Improvement Co.
I used him very heavily for many years
I had mixed results and no longer use him
A one line summary would be that he was fun to work with but over time he took too much effort to manage
As for quality, he has excellent personal knowledge and good workmen in core things like carpentry, tile, and structure. The quality of his subs (painting, roofing etc.) is below norm.
As for price, he has the attitude of a commercial general contractor - if you ask for a competitive bid then you get competitive prices, if you do not ask and compare then Shame on You. Once the job is done there are always overages, but he has an old-world attitude towards the negotiating that almost makes it a pleasant experience.
As for guarantee -- he responds very quickly (even on holidays) and always addresses your concerns -- then starts the payment negotiation. If you stand your ground, he smiles and moves on. If the quality problem is with a sub, then he will get in another sub to do the work -- which I am sure costs him. However, it is wearing to continue to push.
So, as I said, I like Herb and would use him again on a major project where I had the time and effort to keep up with the dance. I miss having him around because it was convenient to work with someone who responded quickly to any problem -- but that service was more than I could afford.

I have used George Cyr of Cyr Contracting to do work on my house a few times. He is very reliable and does excellent quality work. He handles all aspects of carpentry and building including additions and remodelling. He would also be able to bring in an electrician and a mason to help you.

Jim Murphy

The people I use, and recommend highly, for both commercial and home jobs, include:
General contractor and carpenter: Jim Murphy 508-788-0514
Plumber: Steve Bottazzi 508-616-1303
Electrician: Dave Comerato 508-879-9848
Jim can also help you find a painter, plasterer, carpet guy, etc.
All are honest, friendly, intelligent, and reasonably-priced. Always good to get quotes, of course, but these guys will be competitive.

Hi all,
Dan Peirce, owner of Peirce Home Improvement, Inc. is a fantastic all-around-contractor who has done a great job at all work he has done for me.
In addition to deck power-washing and staining, he also constructs decks and does all-around carpentry work. Dan has expertise and experience installing doors, windows, hardwood flooring, and is an excellent painter.
His work is impeccable and after he's been here you'd never know that he was, he cleans up so well! His prices are very reasonable. He works mostly in the Metro West area.
He is easy to work with and very reliable. If he does work for you, you won't be sorry! Please tell him Roberta sent you.
Best,

I can also vouch for Dan Peirce- he is wonderful! He has done work for me, for many of my clients, is professional, pays attention to detail and the most amazing thing is that he shows up when he says he is going to be there, calls if something comes up to prevent his timely arrival, and his fees are fair and reasonable. A jack of all trades, from the smallest job to a full addition or major remodel. Did I mention honest and likable too?

I would like to highly recommend Peirce Home Improvement. When we decided it was time to do some upgrades (painting, minor construction and new countertops) to our home, the first place I looked was on the Framcom Wiki. The recommendations for Peirce Home Improvement stood out to me. I would just like to say that not only are we happy with the final products, but we are incredibly satisfied with the level of service Dan Peirce provided us throughout our updates. He has been available when we needed him, shows up on time, and provided a quality-finished product. When we had issues with a vendor, Dan, as the liaison, stepped in and made what could have been a difficult process, feel seamless. We will continue to use Peirce Home Improvement for our home improvement needs.

We have also had great luck with Dan Pierce for remodeling. He actually had to come in and correct some work done previously by another remodeling company. We found him to be very competent, honest, hard working, and was very easy to communicate with during a difficult process. A very nice person to have around as well. I would recommend him without reservation.

John Teti is an honest, hardworking craftsman that can, and IS WILLING TO TAKE ON, all types of work. Whether you are in need of a handyman, home repair or maintenance person, remodeler, roofer or furniture building, John's work is impeccable and his prices are extremely reasonable. Plus, he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
John has my highest recommendation!
Michael Wishnow 12/4/08
We first hired John Teti from a recommendation on the wiki(thank you Wishnows!). Our experience with John has been so positive that I feel compelled to share.
John has a Home Improvement license, an unrestricted Builder's license and carries liability insurance. He grew up here and lives in Framingham with his family. John is a fantastic "can do anything for your house" contractor. He performed small jobs, carpentry, and more extensive remodeling for us. He hauled wet carpet and baseboard out of our basement and is refinishing it. He can be your general contractor and handle it all, but he's not greedy, and will refer other trade specialists if that is preferred. He is accessible, communicative(picks up his phone, returns calls and emails)honest, flexible and easy to have around. He is virtually always on the job himself, so you know who you're getting. He has been courteous in scheduling and true to his timelines. His prices are more than reasonable and he really does come back if something needs adjusting. He can do anything as far as we can tell - he plows our driveway now too. I'd like to see him do well, he is hard working and really deserves this recommendation.

We too have to highly recommend John Teti. John has been very different from other contractors we have dealt with. The first thing you will notice about him is that if you schedule a time to meet with him – he is there on the dot. I don't know how many times I feel I wasted my time waiting for contractors to show up for a scheduled appointment only to get a no show or some insanely lame excuse of why they would not be coming.
John did a demo of our existing deck and then built a deck from the ground up with an enclosed screened room. We also had a number of smaller jobs added to the main job (replacing a door with a window, installing a storm window, etc.). We were very happy with the quality of workmanship.
John was on site for the entire project and did not require "babysitting." He just did his thing and checked in with us during significant milestones to make sure we were happy with the progress. We felt John took pride in his work and made sure we were going to be happy with anything he was going to put his name on.
We found John's prices to be reasonable and when little things came up during the project –we did not get the nickel and dime treatment from him. We asked for worst case scenarios of things that could possibly go wrong (i.e. cost us more out of pocket) and he laid everything out for us. There were no "surprises."
We would definitely use him again for another construction project.
